Millenium Bridge The first bridge to span the Thames since the Tower Bridge in 1894, the Millennium Bridge was officially opened on June 10, 2000 and closed again two days later for modifications. The footbridge links the City on the north side of the Thames to Bankside to the south, and leads from the Tate Modern (south) across to St. Paul's Cathedral (slightly north). The London Bridge The London Bridge crosses the River Thames between the City of London and Southwark. One of the most famous bridges in the world, this was the only bridge over the river until the mid 1700s. There has been a bridge on this site for almost 2,000 years, but the current bridge was completed in 1972. The previous bridge, built in 1831, was sold to McCulloch Oil of Arizona in 1968. Address: . Westminster Bridge Westminster Bridge is the oldest bridge in central London, dating to 1862. The current bridge was constructed to replace one built in 1750, and spans seven arches, making it the largest Thames River crossing. At one end are the Royal Treasury, the House of Commons, Westminster Abbey, Big Ben and the Palace of Westminster.
