Crystal Palace take their name from the exhibition hall of the same name that used to stand in the Sydenham area of south London where the team play home games. These days they play at the aging Selhurst Park stadium. On the pitch, the club enjoys mixed fortunes. Generally too good for the League Championship and not good enough for the Premier League the team tend to go through a cycle of being promoted and relgated between these two divisions. For a time QPR, as they are more popularly known, were the best team in London. Goals came easily to them and they were regularly in the top half of the top division. As the strength of the Premier League grew, QPR struggled to compete with the business nous of other teams and were relegated to the lower divisions. Now established in the middle order of the second tier of football, QPR are beginning to look like they might one day return to former glories. Address: South Africa Road London England UK W12 7PA

An unfashionable south London club, Charlton are much loved for their consistent humbling of the big boys from the other side of the river. Close to financial ruin in the early 1990s, the club has had a dramatic turn in fortunes thanks to intelligent manager Alan Curbishley. Tickets to watch games at Charlton's ground, The Valley, are usually available online. Address: Floyd Road London England UK SE7 8BL

Known as the Cottagers, Craven Cottage is the name of the team's stadium. Fulham were languishing in the lower echelons of football until Harrods owner Mohammed Al Fayed took over the club. They are now an established Premier League outfit and it can be easier to get a ticket here than for some of the other London based clubs. It's worth considering Fulham for the chance to sit in the Stevenage Road stand, one of the longest standing terraces of any sports stadium. Tours of the ground are possible. Argueably London's most successful club, Arsenal have recently moved from their historic Highbury stadium. Many of the Art Deco buildings of Highbury still stand near Arsenal Tube station. The team's new ground at nearby Ashburton Grove has a much larger seating capacity, meaning tickets, which were almost impossible to get for games at Highbury, should be easier to come by.
